Rattus rattus

The roof rat (Rattus rattus), also know as the house rat, ship rat, and black rat, is a common long-tailed rodent of the rat genus Rattus. The roof rat is the smaller of the two commensal rats commonly found in Western Michigan. Their name comes from their habits of finding shelter in the upper parts of buildings and homes; so if you are hearing noises in your attic at night. . .its a high probability that you are hearing roof rats. 

Roof Rat Characteristics.

Length: 13" to 15" long, including the tail. 
Color: Their color ranges from light brown in color to dark gray with a lighter underside.
Habits: Roof rats are omnivore and a serious pest to farmers, restaurants, commercial buildings, and even homes in Western Michigan. They are great climbers (it's in their name), their climbing ability is very similar to the gray squirrels. They are a commensal pest, meaning they "share ones table", living off humans. So it's typical to find them in neighborhoods and urban areas where food and shelter are abundant.  They will seek shelter in structures; commonly nesting in attics, drop ceilings, eaves, and even in your walls.

Yes, roof rats are a known vector carrying pests, the can contaminate surface ares in the living space of your home. They can contaminating your counter tops and food serving as vectors of dangerous diseases.
